Sponsored green vehicle on display to shoppers
Four students and two apprentices met the shopping public with their teachers from Bay House School in Gosport today when they displayed their eco car ‘Bolt’ in the malls at Fareham Shopping Centre. Now the local community have been given the chance to meet the pupils with the car and see for themselves the quality of work completed by local youngsters.
Headmaster Ian Potter from Bay House School, with Keith Last their Head of Technology and CDT teacher Helen Roberts, introduced the pupils to local apprentices from Network Rail and their Programme Manager Ken McAllister.
The pupils were actively involved in designing and constructing their environmentally friendly vehicle which they raced against other Greenpower vehicles in the South Central Regional Heat held at Goodwood this summer. Sponsored by Fareham Shopping Centre, the school’s Bay House Racers and the vehicle were put to the test in the four hour endurance race, completing an impressive 30 laps during which they covered 72 miles without any technical problems.
Speaking on behalf of the project sponsor Fareham Shopping Centre, Centre Director Pam Marsden, said: “We are absolutely thrilled that the team and their car performed so well. Greenpower is a great opportunity for our young people to explore a career in design and engineering and for them to have competed so well against such strong competition without a hitch is a great credit to the school and the pupils taking part. Very well done to all involved!”
The project is part of a national initiative inspired by the charity Greenpower Education Trust to promote careers in engineering, while also focusing on sustainability, teamwork and the community.
