The Green Genie Campaign has been running for over a year at Fareham Shopping Centre and they were recently rewarded for their efforts by scooping 2nd runner up in the Care for the Environment category in the News “We can do it” awards.

On-going campaigns at the Centre include recycling stamps, bottle tops and trainers which had customers flocking to the recycling point within the Centre to do their bit for the Carbon Footprint.

The News recognised Fareham Shopping Centre and LCM for their efforts towards the environment and invited them to the awards ceremony at The Theatre Royal in Portsmouth where they soon found out that they had been short listed.

'Stamping out waste’ is part of Fareham Shopping Centre’s ongoing Green Genie eco-friendly campaign. Specially re-designed envelopes, which are now made from paper and can be recycled, are available in which shoppers collect used postage stamps; they can be obtained from a stand next to the Centre’s Information Desk and at Fareham Borough Council’s offices. The stamps are sold to a recycling company with proceeds donated to the Stubbington Ark.

Pam Gillard, Manager of Fareham Shopping Centre said: “The Green Genie campaign continues to be popular. We are aware that many Fareham shoppers are keen to recycle more and it is our intention to help as much as possible. With ‘Stamping out waste’ and our other initiatives, we are helping people to be involved in our recycling initiatives and raising money for a very worthwhile cause at the same time.”

The Stubbington Ark is the focus for local RSPCA animal welfare services covering an area of 400 miles which includes the Portsmouth and Southampton area.  It provides shelter for all manner of animals, domestic and wildlife, and can accommodate 600 animals on site at any one time.

Vanessa Eden, Fundraising Manager at the Stubbington Ark commented: “I would urge Fareham’s shoppers to carry on collecting the stamps and return them to the Shopping Centre’s Information Desk, as the funds raised are helping to build a state of the art Veterinary Unit at the shelter.
